These 3d models are best used in combination with the official footprint libs. I didn t get as far as i wanted but i did manage to convert smaller pcbs. Wrl files provide support for material properties allowing superior 3d rendering within kicad. When the 3d model export functionality was added to kicad i was trying to convert the vrml file to step to be able to use it in alibre design which we use for mechanical cad work.
